The Vilnius heating network, with its antiquated plants originally designed for burning heavy fuel, offered wide margins of manoeuvre for improved environmental performance. Specific enhancements to date include:

• Twelve new burners for the VE3 boiler plant, bringing NOX emissions down from 600 mg to 280 mg (below the regulatory threshold

• Systematic detection and repair of water leaks in the network

• Renovation of boilers and optimization of boiler processes, bringing substantial energy savings
